How To Turn Your House Into A Home: Hygge Style

Let’s start at the beginning. According to Webster’s dictionary, Hygge is a “quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.” Think of it as cozy meets minimalism. The idea is to make the coziest space with the least amount of items. So in other words, DECLUTTER. Hygge is an idea brought on by the Danish and Norwegians and has become popular around the world. Follow along with my easy recommendations and you’ll feel cozy and relaxed in no time!

Flickering lights

This is a great place to began. If you ask the Danish or Norwegians what they feel is the most “Hygge” thing, it’s candles. Though you don’t always have to use real candles. You can always substitute flameless, battery-powered candles or even an essential oil diffuser that features a “flicker mode.”

Blankets

Blankets are a key component of coziness (obviously). I recommend a wool, chunky knit blanket. These blankets are typically a little heavier than others and really have a way of making you feel relaxed. If you don’t have a wool blanket, then I suggest selecting a fluffy blanket in a neutral color. Remember, Hygge is coziness + minimalism. Although there are no rules, I wouldn’t recommend any bright colors when practicing Hygge.

Pillows

First, there is no such thing as too many pillows! I like to have feather pillows on my couch and bed. For some reason feather pillows just seem to gently cradle you. Whatever your preference is, I believe the more pillows, the better.

String Lights

I LOVE to incorporate string lights into my home décor, especially in the fall and winter. I would recommend small bulbs and white lights. If you don’t want to damage your walls, you can hang some small hooks with adhesive strips or simply drape them along your furniture. If you really want to get creative, you can purchase some “fairy lights” and place them in a mason jar to add to the aesthetic.

After you’ve set the mood, the last thing to do is curl up with a good book and some hot chocolate. You can also swap out the book for your favorite movie and hot chocolate for your favorite warm drink! Got some cozy suggestions? Drop us a line in the comments.

Until next time,

Savanna
